Greetings from Naveen Cabral, the Primary music teacher for Grades 4 and 5. I have also been assigned the responsibility of a Performance Co-ordinator in the Primary, under which I do run the Primary Musical and the Festival of Choirs. I am very excited to be entering my 13th year in teaching, 11 of which have been with the best of PYP schools. I play the guitar, recorder, keyboard/piano, xylophones and a few other instruments but my forte lies in singing. In addition to my strong PYP experience, I recently completed my Grade 8 Vocals in Trinity - Rock and Pop. I have also completed various other music certifications through the Trinity College of Music. I have been trained by quite a few professionals in different instruments and musical technique. In addition to the Music Together certification that I have, I have attended quite a few IB workshops (PYP). I do perform as a musician in my spare time, as a vent to my outburst of passion and love for music.
I believe my education and degree in my career has mainly been my teaching experience, which has helped me acquire the best from my students as we worked together to create great music and events. My aim will always be to help the students acquire musical skills and knowledge that will help them improve as an overall personality towards a better future for our world.
The Winter Concert was a terrific success in the Primary. At least thats what we got to know from the parents who personally came and spoke to us as well as the HRTs about what they thought about the performances.

As we are getting ready for our concerts, thought I could post the costume policy for our students. This policy has been sent out through the school bulletins and is to help reinforce what we need to bear in mind about our costumes.
Costumes for Concerts and Performances (Grade 1-5)
Please find listed details about our 'Costumes' policy for our concerts and performances in the Primary. Costumes are an important part of performances as it immediately supports the characters and roles and helps add confidence and life to the whole setup.
Costume differences by class/grade- Costumes are finalised by the individual classes or grades depending on the performances. In many cases, different classes will have different costume requirements. We usually try to keep costumes simple and limit them to easy to find items and clothing students might already have. We would like you to work out costumes from what you may currently have or from what you could borrow.
When classes want to make costumes more complex or get tailored clothing- In some cases parents have asked to get tailored costumes. In this case, costumes must still be approved by Mr. Cabral/Ms. Henderson and would need to be arranged by parents. Please bear in mind, that you are requested to keep the other parents informed about prices that would be incurred by the child for the costumes and only then, you may proceed with it after you receive a go ahead from that parent. Costs will need to be limited to a maximum of INR 1200 per child. The school will not be collecting any money nor will be taking up the role of providing costumes to the students. Guidance can be definitely taken from our music teachers and your homeroom teacher. If a tailor is coming in, it must be prearranged at the convenience of the homeroom teacher and the tailor must be accompanied by the arranging parent.

The Grades 3, 4 and 5 are having a lot of fun using www.noteflight.com. They have begun composing their first music using the notations they know and will be using the same in a drum cirlce. The good part about this website is
1) It is an online tool and so can be accessed on the internet from any device and location.
2) You only need to sign up for it once
3) All your work can be saved online.
4) You can also export you projects/music scores and save it on your personal devices.
For the summative assessments for the Melody And Vocal Exploration Unit, the students are asked to record their singing to the karaoke track provided here and they would be graded on the rubric pasted below. They can sing for a min of 30 seconds and are also free to choose another appropriate song of their choice, if they wish.

We are really proud and excited to have received a little over 100 entries for the Talent Show. The deadline for the same is 4 pm today. Now begins the hard task of organising the participants and scheduling them for the auditions. We would like to make it clear that we are absolutely fine with what ever levels the students are at for their performances, but we are going to check on how prepared the students are for the performance.
It would be nice to have an opportunity for our students to perform to music (singing/dancing/playing an instrument). This will not only help students have an outlet to exhibit their potential and showcase it, but will also help teachers and students to get to know each other better. This is not a competition, but instead an outlet to promote our student talent and give them a stage to exhibit their efforts.
The performances are scheduled for the:
10th September - 8.15 to 8.45 am - Grade 3
11th September - 8.15 to 8.45 am - Grade 4
12th September - 8.15 to 8.45 am - Grade 5
Points to be noted:
ØThe students can participate as a solo/duet/trio or
any group size.
ØAuditions will be held to finalize who can be part of
this at the sole discretion of the music teacher.
ØStudents will need to perform for a minimum time of 1
minute and a maximum time of 2 minutes. Groups of 4 or more can perform up to 3
minutes.
ØStudents will need to get their own music/instruments/props
for the auditions as well as the final event. Students will need to coordinate
their own rehearsals and practice venues.
ØAuditions are to help finalize performers for
the event, and depending on the number of performers, time slots will be
assigned for the show.
ØParents will not be allowed to be present at the auditions
but are welcome to attend the show.
ØIf there are too many students wanting to perform, and
if we are unable to accommodate them all, then we will have to give preferences
to groups versus solo performers.
ØStudents can work together across sections and Grades
(3, 4 and 5)
ØFor the auditions, the students will need to perform
for not more than a minute. They need not come in costumes but will need to
have their instruments with them if they are playing one.
Auditions will be held during
lunch recess from September 3rd, 4th, and 5th
from 11:45am to 12:30pm. Entry forms need to sent in by 4pm on August 28th.
Entries sent in later will not be considered. Entry forms are available with
Mr. Cabral in room 307 or you can download and fill in the form.All forms must be turned in directly to Mr.
Cabral. For the auditions, each entry will be allotted a day and when the
performers will need to be present for tryouts. In case you need any
